How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home in Chennai?

There is no single right answer for every home, but there is a sensible rhythm for most Chennai households. Climate, the size of your family, how often you cook and whether you live near the sea or a busy road all change how quickly dirt builds up. This guide gives a realistic schedule you can adapt.

The short answer

For most Chennai homes, a full deep clean every three to six months works well, with a kitchen and bathroom deep clean every two to three months in between. Regular weekly cleaning handles the rest.

Why Chennai homes need more frequent deep cleaning

Humidity and mould

Chennai's air is humid for much of the year. Moisture settles in bathrooms, wardrobes and behind furniture, and that encourages mould spots, musty smells and damp patches on walls. Deep cleaning bathrooms and airing out cupboards every few months keeps this under control.

The north-east monsoon

Between October and December, heavy rain brings mud, damp footwear and, in low-lying areas, the risk of water entering ground-floor homes. A deep clean in January, often timed with Pongal, is a good reset after the rains.

Hard water

Groundwater and tanker water in many parts of the city are high in minerals. That leaves white scale on taps, shower heads and glass, and yellowish stains on tiles. Descaling every two to three months prevents it from hardening into stains that are difficult to shift.

Dust and coastal air

Homes near arterial roads or construction sites collect fine dust on fans, grilles and window sills. In coastal areas such as Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur, salt air dulls glass and metal fittings. Both call for more frequent cleaning of windows, grilles and balconies.

• January: Full home deep clean after the monsoon, ahead of Pongal.
• April to May: Kitchen and bathroom deep clean, plus fan and AC vent exteriors before peak summer.
• July to August: Sofa and carpet cleaning, and a check of wardrobes for damp.
